Kristoffer Myskja
15.10. - 15.11.2009

Kristoffer Myskja is a Norwegian artist from Trondheim, but nowadays he lives
and works in Oslo. Here he introduces his work which he is making during the
residence period at the SUMU AIR:

Untitled installation

The installation consists of a powerful motor mounted to the floor with
the rotating shaft pointing upwards. The shaft is extended by a metal
tube that runs all the way up to the ceiling. On to this rotating
column, there is attached a multitude of corrugated tubing with
different lengths. When the motor is switched on and the column starts
to rotate, the tubes starts to spin around in the room, causing air to
get sucked into the end of the tubes closest to the shaft and pushed out
of the other end due to the centrifugal force caused by the rotation.
The movement of air through the tubes produces sounds in a way much like
the Willow flute (/pitkähuilu/), an instrument based on the harmonic
scale. The violent and dangerous appearance of the apparatus will
hopefully be complemented by a rich and massive sound as the individual
tones mix together in the room, creating an uncomfortable yet compelling
experience!
