During the residency, I will concentrate on my Chance project, a new project titled In My Shoes, and other exercises in which I put myself literally in the center of a barrage of questions about life and making art. Chance is an ongoing psychogeographical walk performance project through cities worldwide for which the viewers determine the direction of my walk based upon the roll of a die. The die indicates that I move forward, backward, right, left, spin, and stand in place. I accept thirty die rolls, and then proceed on my walk, wearing four video cameras attached to my person, through the streets in each city accordingly. For the walks, I wear a mirrored suit so that my presence on the street has a dichotomous relationship between being real and illusionary given this oscillating dualistic character of mirrors. After completing the walk with the video cameras, I return to each intersection that I encountered and photograph the front, back, and side views, creating a photographic cartography as well. During In My Shoes, I will wear community members' shoes for one block while filming with video. Actualizing the old adage, “walk a mile in my shoes,” I will metaphorically experience a different perspective than my own. Once I have finished the performance, I will photograph each pair of shoes. Other exercises, performing with the cameras, are usually inspired by the unique terrain or social characteristics or customs of urban and rural landscapes.
