COME ON PILGRIM
GALLERIA TITANIKISSA 5.-28.2.2010

We are the new gallery committee from Titanik gallery in Turku and we are looking for short time exhibitions and performances. If you think your work is related with our theme tieto (engl. knowledge, information) then send your proposal to us at info@titanik.fi , or come to visit the gallery. In the time from 5.2. till 28.2. we are offering the gallery space for free! Come for one day, come for three days, come on pilgrim, make an evening yours.

Vuonna 1960 perustettuun ammattikuvataiteilijoiden yhdistys Arte ry:n kuuluu noin 100 jäsentä.

Vuodesta 1988 lähtien Arte ry on ylläpitänyt Turussa Titanik-galleriaa. Yhteiskunnallisesti kantaaottavien ja kaupunkitilaan liittyvillä näyttelyillä ja projekteilla on perinteitä Arte ry:ssä. Arte pyrkii toiminnassaan rikkomaan rajoja

CURRENT ARTIST

1.1.-14.3.2010
Emily Sweeney & William Bilwa Costa, Philadelphia, USA

Breathspace

What does my body say to your body? What does your skin hear? What do my
movements say to your muscles? What does my breath say to your lungs?*

While at SUMU, Emily Sweeney and Bilwa will develop *breathscape*, a
performance installation that integrates body-sounds and videos with live
performance to investigate the impact of new media technologies on somatic
experience. Breath, muscle movement, and touch?basic, universal elements of
physicality?become common points of reference around which audience and
performer consider the ways our bodies hold images, ideas, and memories in
both live and virtual contexts. *breathscape* seeks to draw observers?
attention to their own kinesthetic navigation of emerging technological
environments, providing a space for meditating on the body?s changing
communicative powers in the emerging virtual realm.

ARTE
Artist’s Association Arte • Itäinen Rantakatu 8, 20700 Turku, Finland

Artists' Association Arte was founded in 1960. Originally formed as an exhibition group with vigorously expressed opinions, it has turned into an association of professional visual artists operating mostly in the city of Turku, Finland. The main purpose of the association is to promote visual arts in the city as well as to improve the professional, social and economical benefits of the artists living in Turku and the nearby areas. Arte actively takes part in the art discussions and brings up questions which are important for the artists. The social situation of the artists, studio situation in Turku, communal politics and art purchase of the institutions and museum as well as are important matters.

Artists’ Association Arte arranges interesting exhibitions and cultural events. Gallery Titanik,
which Arte has run since 1988, acts as an important centre for the association. In addition to that, the association runs the international media art residency Sumu. Arte organizes many projects, workshops and events, not just in the gallery space but often out in the city as well.

At the moment Arte Association has about 90 members, all professional artists, mostly living in Turku but some as far away as in Vietnam and Australia. Arte consists of e.g. painters, printmakers, sculptors, performance artists, animators, video artists and photographers. Many of Arte’s members are well-known both nationally and internationally, but the association also provides good opportunities for young promising artists to develop their careers. Arte is an active artists’ association, and although it’s already middle aged, its mind is still fresh and young!

TITANIK

Artist’s Association Arte has its own artist-run gallery, Gallery Titanik, in the very heart of Turku, the oldest city in Finland. The gallery was established in 1988 on the banks of the Aura River, in a space previously occupied by a public lavatory. Since the establishment, Gallery Titanik has introduced good quality contemporary art, hosted hundreds of interesting exhibitions and acted as an alternative choice in the local art scene. Besides exhibitions the gallery provides space for Arte Association’s office and Sumu Residence’s studio.

Titanik hosts exhibitions all through the year, and the entrance to the gallery is free.

SUMU

Since 2006, Artists’ Association Arte has offered international new media artists 1-3 month long residencies in its media art residency Sumu. The residency program is meant for international new media artists, working in the intersection of new technologies and contemporary art. The artists are provided with a studio adjoined to Arte’s gallery Titanik, and the accommodation is arranged in a nearby guesthouse by Åbo Akademi (Swedish University). Transportation and other living expences are not included in the program funding. The residency artists have the possibility to have an exhibition either in the Sumu studio or on Arte’s website, and they can arrange several workshops or public screenings during the residency if they want to.

In addition to international residencies Arte concentrates especially on Nordic co-operations by inviting media artists from Nordic countries to Sumu. International artists can apply for a residency at Sumu once a year with an individual submission.

Arte r.f.
